A pool filtration system is designed to remove dirt and debris while circulating the water. Circulation is crucial for even chemical distribution and for keeping the water clean and safe – especially for children, who are more sensitive to unhealthy water. The faster the water circulates and the finer the filter, the easier your pool will be to maintain.

There are two main types of pool filters – cartridge and sand (or glass media). Each has its own advantages depending on price, water quality, and lifestyle. For example, a cartridge filter is ideal for country properties with limited water supply, while sand or glass media filters work best in areas with high calcium levels in the water. Cartridge Filters

Cartridge filters are the simplest and most economical option, with no valve or filter medium required. They are compact, easy to use, and environmentally friendly since they don’t waste water or chemicals through backwashing.

•Cleaning: Remove and hose out dirt, with a chemical soak 3 times a year to remove oils and sunscreen.

Sand & Glass Filters

Sand filters are the most widely used in domestic pools and are simple to operate with a multi-port valve. The filter media – silica sand or glass – needs replacing periodically depending on the type.

•Sand media: Filters to about 20 microns; needs replacing every 4–6 years.
•Recycled glass media: Filters to about 10 microns; lasts around 6 years.
•Glass Pearls: Premium option; filters to about 5 microns; lasts around 10 years.
•Backwashing: Sand uses approx. 300–350 litres of water per cycle; glass uses about half. Many councils require soak wells for backwash water.
•Best suited for: Areas with high calcium in the water.

Multicyclone Pre-Filter

Installed between the pump and main filter, the Multicyclone uses centrifugal force to remove up to 80% of large particles before they reach your filter.
